Di’s Father Sells More Heirlooms
The father of Princess Diana, Britain’s future queen, today parted with more family heirlooms to help pay a $2.7-million bill for repairs to his family’s ancestral home.
He expressed regret at having to sell the works but said it was the only way to keep up his palatial residence.
Five paintings owned by Earl Spencer, who lives at Althorp in Northamptonshire, central England, raised almost $234,000 at Sotheby’s here.
One 18th-Century painting of a black and white spaniel and a fox hound by sporting artist John Wooten, fetched $197,000 from an unidentified private collector. The remaining amount came from four portraits.
Last week, Spencer sold a 15th-Century painting entitled “St. Christopher with the Infant Christ and St. Peter” by Venetian Cima for more than $345,000 in a separate sale at Sotheby’s.
