More Spending Cuts Due, Thatcher Says
Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher said Tuesday that there will have to be more cuts in public spending to meet her election pledge to lower taxes.
Severe spending cuts coupled with record unemployment have been blamed for the Conservative Party’s humiliating defeat in Welsh voting last week, its worst by-election trouncing in nearly 25 years.
In an interview with the Sun newspaper, Thatcher warned that she will be standing firm at a Cabinet meeting on Thursday to set next year’s spending goals.
Thatcher said that murmurings of revolt among Conservative members of Parliament have not reached her: “I think I would have heard if there had been calls for changes on any significant scale.”
She added, “I don’t believe the country wants a weak government. I think they want government with a bit of spine.”
