Anaheim : Convenience Market Denied Alcohol Permit

Share

A convenience market owner who walked into a City Council meeting with an attorney, relatives and supportive neighbors lost his bid for a temporary beer and wine license when city officials upheld a previous decision to deny the request.

Shirin A. Damani, owner of Prince Supermarket, 1200 W. Cerritos Ave., said that without permission to sell beer and wine, his store would go out of business. Damani was denied the license in April, and he charged then that City Council members were discriminating against him because he is from Pakistan.

During a rehearing of the request Tuesday, council members said the residential area was not a suitable location for the sale of alcohol.

Damani said his neighbors supported him. Last month, he told council members he had collected more than 600 signatures in support of his request.

Tuesday, the city officials heard comment on the question from both supporters and opponents of the license, City Clerk Lee Sohl said.
