Federal authorities said they are investigating reports that a long-time janitorial employee may have been living in San Francisco’s 20-story federal office building for the last 17 years. General Services Administration spokeswoman Mary Filipini said there have been numerous “rumors” that the janitor, identified as Virgil Johnson, had been living in the third-floor storeroom for five years and had previously occupied quarters in the boiler room and other locations during his 21 years of employment. A hot plate, television, bedding and other personal effects including money and stock and bond certificates were found in the storeroom when officials visited it. Johnson, said to be on vacation, was not available for comment.
