Turbine blades from a failed engine of an Eastern Airlines jet, some a foot long, rained down on a Miami neighborhood, punching holes in roofs and shattering car windows, officials said today.

The blades fell on an residential area about a mile from Miami International Airport Thursday night after one of three engines failed on a Boeing 727 bound for Washington.

Residents playing on a neighborhood football field fled.

Eastern spokeswoman Paula Musto said the plane turned around and landed safely at the airport.
