Four inmates described as the ringleaders of a June 2 uprising at Los Angeles County Jail were arraigned in Municipal Court on several charges--including conspiracy to riot, assault with caustic chemicals and assault on peace officers. They are Quintin James, 21, Steve Canady, 26, Vincent Bruce, 22, and Anthony Morrison. James, authorities said, is already serving a life term for first-degree murder. Also arraigned were Michael Mayfield, 22, Armando Mines, 21, and Cortez Chapman, 24, who were accused of assaulting officers with bleach. An eighth inmate, Darrell Taves, 23, was arraigned on a charge of possessing weapons in jail. During the two-hour confrontation, which authorities claim was planned by members of a street gang confined to one cell block, at least 40 inmates and 12 deputies were injured. Officers used fire hoses, night sticks and flash grenades to subdue the prisoners, who refused to return to their cells after the noon meal.
