EPA Ends Ban, Allows Poisoning of Coyotes

WASHINGTON —
The Environmental Protection Agency, removing a 13-year-old ban imposed to protect wildlife, said Friday it would permit ranchers in the West to use compound 1080 to kill coyotes.
Starting Thursday, compound 1080, sodium monofluoroacetate, may be used by ranchers only in single-dose, sealed collars worn by a sheep or lamb in a fenced area. It may not be used to bait carcasses or on the open range. A coyote generally attacks the throat of its prey.
