The convicted killer of a 10-year-old Baldwin Park girl was sentenced to death by a Pomona Superior Court judge. Robert E. Stansbury, a former ice cream vendor who has acted as his own attorney through nearly a year of court proceedings, delivered lengthy motions for retrial before sentencing. Stansbury, 42, alleged that misconduct on the part of the prosecutor, Stansbury’s assistant attorney and Judge James Piatt destroyed his chances for a fair trial. But Piatt said the allegations lacked specificr and denied all motions. Stansbury’s assistant attorney, David Daugherty, argued against the death penalty over Stansbury’s objections, saying his client requested death only to hasten an appeal of the case in the state Supreme Court. A jury recommended death for Stansbury two months ago for the 1982 rape and murder of Robyn Jackson.
