Israel will free 100 of the 435 remaining predominantly Shia Muslim prisoners from its military prison at Atlit sometime next week, the Defense Ministry said today.

Israel released 300 prisoners from Atlit on July 3, a day after 39 American hostages from a hijacked TWA airliner were freed. The captors of the Americans had demanded the freedom of more than 700 mostly Shia prisoners from Atlit, but Israel insisted there was no connection between the two releases.

Israel transferred 1,020 prisoners to Atlit from its prison camp at Ansar on April 2 as part of its withdrawal from Lebanon. The prisoners have been released in various numbers since then. Israel has said it will release the prisoners gradually as security conditions improve in south Lebanon.
