Tanzania’s President Julius K. Nyerere ended his term as chairman of the Organization of African Unity with an appeal for genuine solidarity among the nations of the debt-ridden continent. Citing regional conflicts, Nyerere said that economic well-being and development of the continent “need a foundation of political peace within nations and between nations.” Shortly after Nyerere’s speech at an NAU summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the organization elected Senegal’s President Abdou Diouf to a one-year term as chairman.
