Floods and landslides in the southwestern Chinese provinces of Sichuan and Guizhou have killed 275 people, destroyed thousands of homes and ruined thousands of acres of crops, the official China Daily said Friday.

The newspaper said civil and military agencies were rushing food, clothing and building material to help the 1.5 million people worst hit by the disastrous floods early this month.

Two dams in Guizhou’s Qianxinan district burst in heavy rains on July 2, and the torrent of water they released killed 47 people and washed away several villages. Heavy rains in the nearby district of Liupanshi killed 64 people and created a hole one mile wide into which more than 100 homes fell, it said. In Sichuan, the upper reaches of the Yangtze River overflowed, killing 23.
