USFL Backers Find Downey ‘Unfunny’

Mike Downey’s frantic screed against the USFL is a classic example of journalistic overkill. When a newspaper writer (?) has to rely on four repetitions of the marginally unfunny “Unusually Stupid Football League” he should realize that Scott Ostler he isn’t.

Putting the knock on Doug Flutie didn’t show many smarts, either. Flutie has much more chance of becoming another Fran Tarkenton than Downey has of becoming another Grantland Rice (he was a sports writer, Mike).
