An assistant attorney general hired last week to handle drunk driving cases for the state Department of Motor Vehicles was arrested today for driving under the influence of alcohol and resigned hours later, authorities said.

Charles Reed Davis, 26, was arrested by Charleston police about 1:30 a.m. Atty. Gen. Charlie Brown said he talked to Davis later and that Davis resigned as of 9:30 a.m.

“It’s real sad, but I don’t want this incident to signify that this office has any less commitment to fight drunken driving,” Brown said. “As a matter of policy, I won’t tolerate drunken driving by my staff.”

Davis, of Morgantown, was released after posting $500 bond in Kanawha County Magistrate Court, said Magistrate Carol Fouty.
