Russell L. Ray Jr., 50, senior vice president-marketing for Eastern Airlines, on Tuesday was named president of Pacific Southwest Airlines, replacing Paul Barkley, who becomes chairman of both the airline and its holding company, San Diego-based PSA Inc. Barkley retains the titles of president of PSA Inc. and chief executive of the airline and its parent company.

The position of chairman has been vacant since the death of William Shimp in May, 1984.

A Los Angeles native, Ray spent 10 years with Lockheed before joining Eastern in 1971. At the Miami-based carrier, he was responsible for airport operations, advertising, passenger and cargo sales and the carrier’s Latin American operations.

At Eastern, meanwhile, Ray will be replaced by John W. Nelson, currently vice president-sales. A second top executive who also resigned Tuesday, Morton Ehrlich, will be replaced as senior vice president-planning by David B. Kunstler, vice president-corporate development and aircraft sales.
