San Diego
Capt. C. Thomas Vaught, commander of the San Diego Naval Station since 1982, will turn over his command to Capt. C. David Ewing in a ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday.
Vaught, who commands about 3,500 men, had received an extension of his command last year to oversee two projects he initiated. He started a program to safely return sailors from shore leave and added badly needed parking spaces to the station, a Navy spokesman said.
During Vaught’s command, the station was first runner-up for the President’s Installation Excellence Award.
Vaught will join the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations for Surface Warfare. Ewing will leave his post as special assistant to the Chief of Naval Personnel for Flag Officer Matters to take over the station.
