As the Navy aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk left on a six-month cruise of the Western Pacific and Indian oceans, Sen. Pete Wilson (R-Calif.) announced plans for Senate hearings on problems in the supply system of the Kitty Hawk and other ships. Bill Livingstone, a Wilson spokesman, said the senator will chair special hearings in September to determine if transferring sophisticated aircraft parts to Iran is a violation of espionage laws or if the law needs to be changed. Seven people, including an aviation storekeeper on the Kitty Hawk, have been charged by federal authorities with selling stolen aircraft parts to Iran.
