The remains of Hurricane Bob moved across New England and New York Friday, spreading heavy rain and gusting winds across much of the area. But officials said the moisture provided no significant relief for the drought-plagued area.

Showers and thundershowers extended from New England across the East Coast states as well as the Tennessee and lower Mississippi valleys.

An estimated 1.18 inches of rain fell on New York’s Central Park in about nine hours. A National Weather Service spokesman termed the amount nothing exceptional, citing the record 2.91 inches for the same date in 1872.

A tornado downed trees and power lines west of Plymouth, N.C. Thunderstorm winds gusted to 67 m.p.h. at Muscle Shoals, Ala.

In addition, showers and thundershowers were scattered from the Great Basin across the Sierra Nevada and northern California. At Lassen Park, Calif., an inch of hail had accumulated on the ground.
