A landslide engulfed a home for the aged in the central Japanese city of Nagano on Friday, killing one person and leaving 39 unaccounted for, police and city officials said.

The body of a woman was found at the home after the landslide, triggered by heavy rains, destroyed more than 50 wooden houses in a hilly part of the city.

The old people’s home housed about 200 people, most of whom were evacuated, but police said 39 are still missing.

One city official said: “We are trying hard to confirm the whereabouts of the remaining people. We believe they have been evacuated and taken over by relatives. But we are afraid some might have been left behind at the home.”

Police said there were no reports of other casualties because residents were ordered to leave their homes when the danger became apparent.

Several hundred of those evacuated were spending the night in the safety of a school gymnasium, police said.
