David Bowie has charged that world hunger will be solved when governments respond to the people’s needs; particularly, when countries in the West dole out their “mountains of food that lie unused” to the starving masses (“Live Aid: The Good Guys Finish First,” by Robert Hilburn, July 21).

Has the whole world gone crazy? Why should we in the West dole out any food to a country like Ethiopia that is a Soviet client state, run by a third-rate Third World dictator who charges us fees for the privilege of unloading food?

Let Bowie vent his contempt toward countries like the Soviet Union, which fulfills its people’s needs so well. Meanwhile, let’s take care of our own citizens here first, please!
