Israel’s defense chief said today that despite U.S. criticism, his country will take whatever measures are necessary to cope with terrorism in occupied territories.

Defense Minister Yitzhak Rabin visited the predominantly Arab city of Nablus after the army announced that three Palestinian student leaders had been jailed without trial for their alleged links with factions of the Palestine Liberation Organization.

Prime Minister Shimon Peres said Israel will expel “dangerous people from the borders of the state” if necessary. His remarks were broadcast on Israel Radio.

Speaking to reporters at the northern port city of Haifa, Peres said Israel must encourage local residents to refuse “to give terrorists a free hand and not to . . . permit them to move about freely.”

The State Department said Monday that it regrets the Israeli Cabinet’s decision to re-introduce administrative detentions and deportation of Palestinians.
