The USW wouldn’t restart talks with Wheeling.

The United Steelworkers’ chief negotiator with strikebound Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel rejected federal mediators’ proposals for resuming talks with the financially crippled steelmaker. USW District 23 Director Paul Rusen accused the mediators of violating the union’s confidence by revealing the position that he and another bargainer took in a private meeting Wednesday. Wheeling-Pittsburgh, undergoing Chapter 11 reorganization, meanwhile has asked U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Warren W. Bentz to prohibit Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia from granting unemployment compensation benefits to 8,200 picketing employees.
