Bell reported on his investigation of E. F. Hutton.

An internal investigation conducted by E. F. Hutton & Co. indicates that only about 60 of the brokerage firm’s 300 branch offices participated in a check-kiting and overdraft scheme, former U.S. Atty. Gen. Griffin Bell said. Bell, who conducted the investigation for Hutton, countered earlier Hutton statements that 100 branches were involved. He said his investigation, which is expected to be completed and made public by Sept. 5, indicates that the scheme was not carried out systemwide.
