The wife of jailed black nationalist leader Nelson Mandela today vowed to take part in an illegal anti-apartheid march scheduled for Wednesday.

“If my people are marching, I would be part of that,” Winnie Mandela said in an interview at her home in the black township of Soweto near Johannesburg.

The Rev. Allan Boesak, a leader of the anti-apartheid United Democratic Front, is organizing the march on Pollsmoor Prison near Cape Town, where Nelson Mandela is held. Winnie Mandela, whose movements are restricted by the government, said her lawyers had asked permission for her to make a routine visit to her husband in prison Wednesday.

“If I am in Cape Town, of course I will join my people in any march against apartheid,” she said.
