International Olympic Committee President Juan Antonio Samaranch left open the possibility that some events of the 1988 Olympic Games could be held in North Korea. But, he ruled out North Korea acting as a joint host with Seoul, South Korea.

North Korea, declaring that the South was unfit to stage the Games, demanded recently that Seoul and the North Korean capital of Pyongyang be named co-hosts.

Samaranch said the IOC was bringing both sides to its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, Oct. 8-9 for talks.

“We have to try to afford to North Korea the best conditions so that they will have to say yes to participating in the Games,” Samaranch said.
