Mexico Restores Diplomatic Ties With El Salvador

Mexico has restored full diplomatic ties with El Salvador, ending a period of cool relations that began five years ago when this country withdrew its ambassador to protest the slaying of a Mexican journalist by the Salvadoran armed forces.

Relations between Mexico and El Salvador have improved since the election of Salvadoran President Jose Napoleon Duarte last year. The first sign of a thaw was the presence of Mexico’s foreign minister at Duarte’s inauguration. However, there is no indication that Mexico will withdraw its moral support for El Salvador’s leftist rebels or order their representatives here to leave the country.

In 1981, Mexico and France recognized the rebels as a “representative political force.” Foreign Ministry officials here emphasized that full diplomatic relations will strengthen Mexican efforts to promote peace talks in Central America.
