Center Provides Grant to Design for Space Living
The Institute for Future Studies of the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-ARC) has received a $15,000 grant from the NASA Ames Research Center to develop alternative internal-design configurations for one of the living modules in the forthcoming NASA Space Station.
The aim of the project is to explore innovative concepts for the design of the wardroom, galley and associated activity areas, and to investigate ways of providing the most comfortable and efficient living environment for six-person crews occupying the space station for up to 90 days.
A team of faculty members and graduate students is developing scale models to lead to the construction of a full-sized mock-up this year or next. This is the first research grant SCI-ARC has received from NASA.
