The youngest man to receive an artificial heart remained in urgent need of a transplant today after suffering multiple strokes, as doctors waited for a response to their pleas for a human donor.

Michael Drummond, 25, the sixth recipient of a Jarvik-7, was in serious condition at University Medical Center. An offer of a heart from a dying 46-year-old San Francisco man was declined because of his age. Officials also were notified of two other possible donors, from Phoenix and Oklahoma City, though neither person had been declared brain dead.
