Los Angeles police Tuesday arrested a husband and wife accused of passing more than $40,000 in bad checks in the last five weeks to at least 15 victims in the San Fernando Valley.

Many of the victims apparently sold the couple cars, police said, only to have the checks they were given bounce.

Steven Phillips, 37, and Diana Phillips, 38, both of Canyon Country, were arrested at a Sherman Oaks motel, Detective Charlene Reming said. Steven Phillips was being held in Van Nuys Jail on $11,000 bail, $10,000 of which is from a previous felony warrant, and his wife is being held on $1,000 bail, police said.

The suspects specialized in purchasing used cars from owners who had placed advertisements in local newspapers, Reming said.
