Charging that California’s compulsory insurance law discriminates against drivers who live in poor, inner-city neighborhoods, seven individuals and the United Front Against Insurance Discrimination have filed suit challenging its constitutionality. The Los Angeles Superior Court suit seeks to halt the state from lifting driver’s licenses of people who cannot show proof of automobile liability insurance, a practice that was started July 1. It also asks the court to declare mandatory auto insurance a denial of due process. The suit was filed by Public Advocates Inc. of San Francisco on behalf of M. L. King and six other Los Angeles area residents.
