U.S. to Ban Krugerrand Soon

Secretary of State George P. Shultz said today that the Reagan Administration intends to ban the importation of South African gold coins within a matter of weeks.

Shultz told a Senate subcommittee that the United States is engaged in a “process of notification and consultation after which the importation of the krugerrand will be banned.” He said the action is not dependent upon approval under an international trading agreement.
