Police in Providence, R. I., said they were providing 24-hour protection for Superior Court Judge Corinne Grande, who received a death threat after she jailed 53 union members for contempt during a 12-day teachers’ strike that ended with ratification of a new contract. Police officials said that a man called and said: “Corinne Grande is going to get hit, and she’s going to get hit hard.” Strikes continued in Seattle, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio and Illinois, affecting about 70,000 students.
