Storm in Atlantic Whirls Toward Leeward Islands

MIAMI —
Tropical Storm Gloria strengthened and whirled toward the Leeward Islands with 50-m.p.h. winds Saturday and forecasters warned that it could become a hurricane before reaching land today.
A hurricane watch and gale warnings were posted for the northern Leeward Islands from Antigua to the Virgin Islands.
