Inmate Frees Director of Psychiatric Institute

ANCHORAGE, Alaska —
The director of the Alaska Psychiatric Institute was released unharmed early Wednesday after being held hostage overnight by an armed patient, state troopers said.
The patient, identified as Carroll Gates, surrendered peacefully after releasing Dr. Bruce Livingstone, trooper spokesman Paul Edscorn said. Gates, who had been a voluntary patient at the institute since July 31, was involuntarily admitted after the incident. No charges were filed.
