Police Crack Down on Drugs in Canada
Almost two years of undercover work by Canadian police officers posing as drug dealers has resulted in one of the largest-ever crackdowns on the importation and sale of illegal drugs in southern Ontario province, police said.
During the 22-month operation, police spent $350,000 to buy narcotics--mainly high-quality cocaine and amphetamines--whose value would have climbed to $7 million by the time it reached the streets, police spokesmen said.
At dawn Tuesday, about 375 officers raided 68 businesses and residences in metropolitan Toronto and outlying locations. They arrested 51 people, who have been charged with various drug offenses, and issued warrants for the arrests of 20 others.
