Zungul Is in Sicily, Says He’ll Join Sockers Oct. 8

The question of the whereabouts of the Sockers’ high-scoring forward Steve Zungul has finally been answered.

Zungul phoned the offices of the Sockers Friday morning to say he was in Sicily and that he would be reporting to training camp Oct. 8, a week later than camp was originally scheduled to start.

“The office told him that he was already a week late,” said Ron Newman, Socker coach. “He said he still had some things to take care of and he would be here as soon as he could.”

Training camp started last Monday because the league announced during the summer that the regular season would be starting a week earlier than originally planned.

While it is apparent that Zungul will return to the Sockers, defenseman Kevin Crow remained a holdout Friday.

“I called Bob Bell and they said he was out of town,” Crow’s agent Scott Simpson said. “So the negotiations are obviously at a standstill.”

Simpson said that Baltimore General Manager Mitch Burke told him Bell had offered the Crow and Fernando Clavijo (another Socker defender represented by Simpson who his holding out) for Baltimore defender Bruce Savage and midfielder Ernie Buriano, but Baltimore declined the offer.

Branko Segota, meanwhile, will be back in San Diego today after clearing up his problems with immigration officials at the U.S.-Canadian border and will play in Sunday night’s exhibition against San Diego State at 7:30 in the Aztec Bowl.
