An ordinance that would repeal a 1% utility users tax has been introduced by the Santa Fe Springs City Council. The tax, imposed in September, 1984, to offset a projected $1.3-million deficit, is no longer needed since the city posted a $3-million surplus for fiscal 1984-85, City Manager Don Powell said. The surplus “put the city in a position to end” the tax, he said. Rescinding of the tax, which would be effective Jan. 1, would save residents and businesses approximately $70,000 a month.
