The San Diego City Council’s Public Services and Safety Committee voted Wednesday to give a volunteer group until 1987 to renovate the Mission Beach roller coaster.
Council members voted a two-year extension of a lease with the Save the Coaster Committee because it was unable to repair the San Diego landmark during its current three-year lease with the city, which was signed in August, 1982.
The group had estimated it would have the coaster scraped and painted by September, 1984, but salt air at the beach and a lack of manpower hampered the effort.
The group anticipates receiving a $150,000 state grant for the work and has already collected $40,000 in donations, although bills for renovation so far have amounted to $43,000.
In granting the extension, committee members issued a stern warning that it would not grant another delay if the work is not finished by mid-1987.
