About 61% of the teachers in Orange County’s Tustin Unified School District stayed away from classrooms in the district’s first strike in its 113 years. Teachers picketed in front of the district’s 14 schools and staged a mass march downtown. Attendance was about normal in the 10,000-student district, Supt. Maurice Ross said. Pay, mandatory union fees and dispute procedures are key issues. Teachers, without a contract since June, 1984, seek a 6.3% raise retroactive for last year and an 8.1% increase for this year.
