YES, ALEXIS, THERE REALLY IS A MOLDAVIA

Share

Most people think that tiny Moldavia, where “Dynasty’s” Denver-based Carringtons and Colbys have been held hostage, is a fictional country. In fact, says a show spokeswoman, it’s a real province in Romania.

Not content with that, Calendar had the Times’ Editorial Library do research. Yes, Moldavia is in Romania, next door to that infamous province, Transylvania, and east of the Carpathian Mountains. It’s been a principality since the 1200s. (History lesson: It united with neighboring Walachia in 1861 to form the beginnings of the modern-day Soviet Bloc nation.)

Marina Teper of Los Angeles castigates the Oct. 6 Outtakes item on “Dynasty” for neglecting to mention that Moldavia is a republic in the Soviet Union though it is also, as we wrote, a province in Romania.

What the real Moldavia doesn’t have is a Mediterranean-looking coastline as depicted in “Dynasty.” It doesn’t have a coastline at all. But then, what does that matter to a show that uses major downtown Los Angeles skyscrapers as stand-ins for Denver architecture?
