Replacement Tree Choice Restricted

Residents who wish to replace sidewalk-damaging trees on city parkways in front of their homes must choose from a “desirable street tree” list approved by the City Council on Tuesday. It includes about 15 trees, including liquidambar and New Zealand Christmas trees.

The list, which took city horticulturist Steve Yamshon nearly eight months to compile, matches street names with appropriate trees that have deep roots and do not damage sidewalks or streets. He said views, climates and soils were considered in compiling the list.

City sidewalks have been cracked and lifted by shallow-rooted trees, such as Italian stone pine, that were planted 20 years ago. The city recently approved a program to share with residents the costs of removing problem trees. Tree replacement is not required, but property owners who replant must select a tree designated for their street. Councilman Robert Ryan opposed the idea, saying people should be able to choose any tree from the approved list.
