The California Institution for Women at Frontera has been ordered to pay for an inmate’s abortion despite a state policy not to pay for abortions beyond the first 12 weeks of pregnancy except for therapeutic or medical reasons. Superior Court Judge William Pitt Hyde in Ontario ruled that the prison had treated Terri Lynn Scrape unfairly by denying her the opportunity to have the abortion. Scrape, 24, who is serving 16-years-to-life in prison for second-degree murder, was nearly 16 weeks pregnant before she was notified of her condition, according to her court complaint.
