The death toll in Sunday’s chain-reaction collision on Interstate 5 near Sacramento was officially reduced to eight as coroner’s officials struggled to identify victims who burned to death in the fire after the smash-up of two heavy tractor-trailer truck rigs, 33 automobiles and four small trucks. Smoke from a grass fire had obscured northbound lanes of the highway. California Highway Patrol officers initially said two victims died while undergoing treatment for injuries, but the Sacramento County coroner’s office later said there were no deaths among the 45 admitted to nine hospitals, that all eight died at the scene.
