China’s Population Growth Rate Drops

PEKING —
China announced Monday that its huge population grew last year by the lowest rate since the Communists came to power in 1949, only 10.81 per 1,000 population, a rate below any period except 1960-62, when natural calamities and the economic setbacks of the Great Leap Forward caused widespread hunger and death.
