TMI Reactor Producing Power

HARRISBURG, Pa. —
The Unit No. 1 nuclear reactor at Three Mile Island began producing electricity today, generating power for consumers for the first time in more than 6 1/2 years.
A spokeswoman for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission said the reactor--idle since the nation’s worst-ever commercial nuclear accident at its twin unit on March 28, 1979--reached 15% of capacity, enough to produce electricity, at 4 a.m.
