The number of AIDS cases has doubled from three to six in the 49,000-inmate California prison system in the last six months, the state Department of Corrections’ chief physician said. In addition, the number of convicts with cases related to acquired immune deficiency syndrome--meaning that they are suffering from other diseases related to contact with the virus--has increased from eight to 13 in the same period, Dr. Nadim Khoury said. Six inmates have died from AIDS, and two who have the incurable disease have been paroled. Khoury told an AIDS seminar in Sacramento that he has no plans to require convicts to be tested for AIDS exposure because it would serve no purpose and would violate a new state law that requires written consent for such tests.
