A three-alarm fire in a one-square-block chemical plant raced out of control in Paterson, N.J., shooting flames hundreds of feet in the air and forcing evacuation of nearby residents, authorities said. The fire, which could be seen three miles away, was edging toward a construction site where dynamite was stored, said police Detective Gene Schnaidt. No injuries were immediately reported, but police Detective John White said ambulances were called to the scene. The fire started in the Kirker Chemical Corp. and continued to burn out of control.
