Utility Tax Exemption Available to Senior Citizens, Disabled

Share

Senior citizens who are at least 62 years old and residents who are permanently disabled and have annual incomes of less than $9,000 can apply for an exemption from the city’s new utility users tax.

The 6% tax, which went into effect last week, applies to water, gas, electric, telephone and cable TV bills.

Senior citizens must show proof of age and deliver copies of their utility bills to the city Finance Department, according to Kathy Chiles, a department official.

Permanently disabled residents must bring proof of income, copies of bills and a statement from their physician confirming their disability, she said.

Residents who qualify will be reimbursed for taxes that have already appeared on their utility bills, Chiles said.

Residents may apply for the exemption through the mail. Forms may be obtained by calling the city at 376-6984, extension 205 or 223, Chiles said.
