CALIFORNIA - News from Oct. 10, 1985

Safeway Stores Inc., Oakland, announced that Group Vice President Donald J. Smith was named director of marketing of the supermarket chain, succeeding John H. Prinster, who is resigning at year-end.

Succeeding Smith as group vice president is William D. Lowe, currently manager of the San Francisco division. Lowe, in turn, will be replaced by George Unti, who was named a vice president.

Additionally, James T. Summers, named last month as manager of the grocery manufacturing division, was promoted to vice president.
