Millions in Italy Stage 2-Hour Protest Strike

MILAN, Italy —
Eighteen million Italian walked off their jobs Wednesday for two hours to protest the government’s decision to cut social security and medical benefits as part of an economy drive.
The nationwide stoppage, called by Italy’s three major trade unions, halted work in the largest industrial groups such as Fiat, Pirelli and Montedison, and stopped public transportation.
