General Electric, citing soft conditions in key areas of the economy, said its third-quarter profit edged up only 2% from a year earlier on a 3% decline in revenue. “The generally sluggish and uneven market conditions experienced earlier this year continued through the third quarter,” GE Chairman John F. Welch Jr. said in a statement.
